GFC Receives Grant to Curb Domestic Violence
Georgia Family Council has been awarded a $10,000 grant from the Verizon Foundation to train teenagers about healthy relationships and avoiding domestic violence.
GFC has been hosting marriage and relationship training classes in communities throughout Georgia for years. This grant will bolster our efforts to specifically reach young people ages 13 to 18 to help them prevent and avoid domestic violence. Classes will be held in Gwinnett and DeKalb counties and in inner-city Atlanta.
Healthy marriages and families begin with healthy relationships. GFC is committed to helping individuals learn the best ways to form and maintain strong relationships through our training classes in local communities.
When it comes to youth, we believe that if they make responsible decisions now, they will avoid many of the consequences that can harm their marriage and parenting in the future, including domestic violence. That's why GFC is supporting training aimed specifically at teenagers.
"Teaching teenagers to form strong, healthy relationships is a great way to avoid the devastating effects of domestic violence before they ever occur," said Joyce Whitted, GFC's Community Marriage & Family Initiative Program Director.
"We want to see young men and women who know what true love and commitment look like and who live it out in their relationships and future family."
The grant was awarded at a press conference in downtown Atlanta on Tuesday. GFC was among nine organizations chosen to receive funding this year and is grateful for the kind support of the Verizon Foundation.
