Reaching Out to Inner-City Atlanta

Kids, parents, families, fun, learning and giving - Community Impact Day had it all.

Georgia Family Council was pleased to co-host this special event in inner-city Atlanta on Saturday, August 13.

The goal: make local residents aware of all the family-strengthening resources and organizations available to them, and get local organizations working together to help residents becomes more self-sufficient.

GFC has been working with local partners in downtown Atlanta for several years, pulling them together into a collaborative coalition that pools their unique strengths to help individuals and families.

CID_1Of course, children are a big focus of Community Impact Day. More than 400 backpacks filled with school supplies were given out.

But the event was about more than giving something away, it emphasized getting parents and children working together.

NFL linebacker Chris Draft led sessions about being active at least one hour a day and reading at least 30 minutes a day. The Police Athletic League encouraged "gloves not guns" teaching the importance of discipline and following instructions.

In all, more than 600 people attended and 25 organizations were represented.

Special thanks to the Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Center for hosting the event and the Urban Family Engagement Initiative (UFEI) for donating the backpacks.

GFC is grateful to everyone who participated in Community Impact Day. The event was proof that people can make a difference in their community by working together.
